SSC CHSL Selection Process 2026

The SSC CHSL recruitment process consists of the following stages:

  1. Tier 1 Computer-Based Examination
  2. Tier 2 Computer-Based Examination
  3. Skill Test/Typing Test, wherever applicable
  4. Document Verification

Tier 1 is used to shortlist candidates for Tier 2. Tier 2 carries the marks that are relevant for final merit, while the Computer Knowledge Test and Skill Test/Typing Test are qualifying components.

Candidates should therefore prepare for every stage rather than concentrating only on Tier 1.

SSC CHSL Exam Pattern 2026

The SSC CHSL examination has separate patterns for Tier 1 and Tier 2. Knowing the number of questions, marks, time limit and negative marking is important before beginning preparation.

SSC CHSL Tier 1 Exam Pattern 2026

Tier 1 is an objective-type Computer-Based Examination consisting of four subjects.

Subject QuestionsMaximum Marks
General Intelligence2550
General Awareness2550
Quantitative Aptitude2550
English Language2550
Total100200

SSC CHSL Tier 2 Exam Pattern 2026

Tier 2 is more extensive than Tier 1 and is conducted in two sessions on the same day.

Session 1 includes:

  • Mathematical Abilities
  • Reasoning and General Intelligence
  • English Language and Comprehension
  • General Awareness
  • Computer Knowledge

Session 2 contains the Skill Test/Typing Test.

SSC CHSL Tier 2 Session 1 Pattern

Section 1Module 1Mathematical Abilities309030 min
Section 1Module 2Reasoning & General Intelligence309030 min
Section 2Module 1English Language & Comprehension4012040 min
Section 2Module 2General Awareness206020 min
Section 3Module 1Computer Knowledge154515 min
Total1354052 hr 15 min

Each objective question in these sections carries three marks. A 1-mark penalty applies for each incorrect answer in Sections 1, 2 and the Computer Knowledge Module.

Which Tier 2 marks count for final merit?

This is an important point for candidates.

The Computer Knowledge Module is qualifying in nature. Therefore, although Tier 2 Session 1 contains 405 marks in total, the marks from the Computer Knowledge Module are not added to the final merit score.

The marks from:

  • Section 1 – Mathematical Abilities + Reasoning
  • Section 2 – English Language & Comprehension + General Awareness

add up to 360 marks, and these are used for merit, subject to the applicable rules and qualifying requirements.

SSC CHSL Tier 2 Skill Test and Typing Test

The Skill Test/Typing Test is conducted during Session 2 and is qualifying in nature.

For DEO/DEO Grade ‘A’

The Skill Test requirements depend on the post and department.

  • For specified DEO posts, candidates may be required to attain 15,000 key depressions per hour.
  • For other DEO posts, the required speed is 8,000 key depressions per hour.
  • The relevant test is conducted for 15 minutes.

For LDC/JSA

Candidates appearing for LDC/JSA posts have to qualify in the Typing Test.

The prescribed typing speed is generally:

  • 35 words per minute in English, or
  • 30 words per minute in Hindi

The typing test is conducted for 10 minutes for LDC/JSA.

Candidates should not leave typing practice until the end of their preparation. Although it is qualifying, failure to clear the required standard can affect eligibility for the concerned post.
